Weekly Tips
Recruiters Confessions
"I feel I need to confess something after 20 years.

In June 1993 I had two candidates, both women, shortlisted for the job of Assistant HR Manager with John Brown Engineering Ltd in Clydebank. Candidate A was exceptionally good for the job, and candidate B was especially dishy. I knew they would hire one of them, and I reckoned it would be the best qualified one. The HR Director and HR Manager wanted another week to consider this.

Unfortunately, waiting till the next Monday meant the placement wouldn’t count for this month’s and this quarterly bonus. The fee would tip me over £15k in fees for the month, which meant a much higher commission rate. For the first, and only ever time, I swaggered up to the board, and confidently wrote up the placement in front of everyone. Only, I was guessing they client would offer the job to Candidate A. Of course, as fate would have it, the job was offered to the woman with the big chest. The following Tuesday, after everyone had left the office, I had to surreptitiously correct all relevant paperwork as well as the name I had written on the board."
