A major problem for the recruiter can be the accepting of counter-offers by candidates and falloffs encountered by some. The natural tendency under such circumstances is to rely on perceived selling skills – saying the right words to the candidates. It is certainly true that all problems in our business will eventually yield to superior selling skills. The best verbiage, however, will not serve if major systemic flaws in the search and placement process exist. A major part of correct selling skills is the ability to coolly analyse that process – and then to make appropriate changes.

Croner verdict on UK Supreme Court mandatory retirement ruling
"The UK Supreme Court’s landmark rulings in the Seldon and Homer cases doesn’t mean that employers can make employment decisions based on age warns Croner (www.cronersolutions.co.uk), the UK’s largest provider of workplace information, software and services, part of Wolters Kluwer.  Richard Smith, Employment Law Expert at Croner commenting on the cases says: 'Both cases demonstrate that the use of age directly or indirectly will amount to age discrimination unless objectively justified. Seldon shows that it may be theoretically possible to justify a retirement age; but to do so will not be easy. The justification must be of measures that were appropriate, necessary and proportionate and if there are non-discriminatory measures that would achieve the same outcome this will undermine justification.  “So for example in Seldon the justification for a compulsory retirement of maintaining dignity by avoiding performance management of older workers may not succeed if there are alternative means such as fair procedures to achieve the same goal; or if there is no evidence to prove that this does allow younger workers to progress the case may fail on its facts.' Croner Advice is to avoid the use of age either directly or indirectly in making employment decisions. If this cannot be done then sound objective reasons must be in place to prevent successful claims. Firms would not be well advised to implement compulsory retirement ages but should manage older workers based on actual performance not assumptions based on age.”

UK leading the social recruitment charge
"A larger proportion of recruiters in the UK post jobs to LinkedIn and Twitter than their peers in the US, Australia or Canada. The UK results, published in the latest  Bullhorn Reach Country Report are based on data from 65,000 Bullhorn Reach  users and compare the differences in Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn use for recruitment purposes across the major English-speaking territories and the rest of the world. The report reveals that 87 per cent of recruiters in the UK post jobs to LinkedIn, 23 per cent post to Facebook and 53 per cent post to Twitter. It also shows that recruiters working at mid-sized agencies (201-1000 employees) use social media more than their colleagues at smaller (200 employees or less) or larger firms (1000 employees or more). The biggest discrepancy across the three social networks can be seen in LinkedIn usage: 81 per cent of recruiters at large firms used the network, compared to 91 per cent at small firms and 98 per cent at mid-sized agencies.
